💡 By 2 October 1944, American and German forces were locked in the Battle of Aachen, fought as the Allies pushed into the Siegfried Line hoping to advance quickly into the industrialized Ruhr basin. Although most civilians had already been evacuated, much of the city was destroyed in fighting that made Aachen the first city on German soil captured by the Allies.
