💡 On 7 October 1777, the second Battle of Saratoga ended in decisive American victory over the British Army near Saratoga, New York, forcing the surrender of General John Burgoyne's forces. Generals Horatio Gates and Benedict Arnold led the American side, and the triumph convinced France to join the war as an ally, a moment historian Edmund Morgan called a turning point of the war.
