💡 San Francisco de Campeche was founded on 4 October 1540 by Spanish conquistadors on the site of the pre-existing Maya city of Can Pech, on the shore of the Bay of Campeche in the Gulf of Mexico. The city carries its old colonial Spanish walls and fortifications, once built to guard against pirates and buccaneers, and by the 2010 census counted 220,389 residents.
