South Africa
💡 The siege of Mafeking, present-day Mahikeng, began in October 1899 as part of the Second Boer War in South Africa and lasted 217 days. Trapped inside the besieged town were Lord Edward Cecil, son of the British prime minister, and Lady Sarah Wilson, daughter of the Duke of Marlborough and aunt of Winston Churchill, while the defense turned Colonel Robert Baden-Powell into a national hero back home.
