💡 On 30 October 1947, representatives of 23 nations signed the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade in Geneva, aiming to promote international trade by cutting tariffs and other barriers. Known as GATT, it took provisional effect on 1 January 1948 and remained in force until 1 January 1995, when the World Trade Organization took its place. The agreement grew out of the failed attempt to create an International Trade Organization, following talks at the United Nations Conference on Trade and Employment.
