💡 On 3 October 2011, the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array began observing from the Chajnantor plateau in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile, at an elevation of 5,000 metres. Its 66 radio telescopes, built through a partnership spanning Europe, the United States, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Chile, study star and planet formation by capturing millimeter and submillimeter radiation with minimal interference from Earth's atmosphere.
