💡 On 9 October 1801, a preliminary Treaty of Paris was signed between the First French Republic under Napoleon Bonaparte and the Ottoman Empire under Sultan Selim III, bringing an end to the French campaign in Egypt and Syria. The agreement restored relations between France and the Ottoman Empire, which had been strained since the French seized the Ionian Islands in 1797.
