💡 On 4 October 1991, delegates signed the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty in Madrid, Spain, designating Antarctica as a natural reserve devoted to peace and science. Known as the Madrid Protocol, it entered into force in January 1998 and reinforced the original Antarctic Treaty's protections for the Antarctic environment and its dependent ecosystems.
