💡 On 10 October 680, forces loyal to the Umayyad caliph Yazid I met the small caravan of Husayn ibn Ali, grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, at Karbala in southern Iraq. Husayn had refused to pledge allegiance to Yazid after the death of the caliph Mu'awiya I, and the clash became one of the defining events of the Second Fitna.
