United States
💡 On 9 October 1888, the Washington Monument opened to the public on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., built to commemorate George Washington, the first president of the United States. Rising 555 feet with a foundation of bluestone gneiss and a granite shaft faced in three kinds of white marble, it remains the third-tallest monumental column in the world, behind only the Juche Tower in Pyongyang and the San Jacinto Monument in Houston, Texas.
