💡 Katsushika Hokusai was born around 31 October 1760 in Honjo, Japan, and grew into one of the leading printmakers of the Edo period. His woodblock series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, created as a response to a domestic travel boom, includes the iconic print The Great Wave off Kanagawa. His landscapes later influenced artists in Europe such as Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet during the wave of Japonisme that spread across Europe in the late 19th century.
