💡 Denis Diderot was born in Langres, France, on 5 October 1713 and became a leading philosopher, art critic, and writer of the Age of Enlightenment, best known as co-founder and chief editor of the Encyclopédie alongside Jean le Rond d'Alembert. Educated at a Jesuit college and briefly drawn to law and the clergy, he decided to become a writer in 1734, a choice that led his father to disown him.
