💡 The painter El Greco was born in the Kingdom of Candia, modern Crete, on 1 October 1541. Trained in the Post-Byzantine tradition before travelling to Venice and later Rome, he became known for works such as The Resurrection, View of Toledo and The Burial of the Count of Orgaz, and is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the Spanish Renaissance.
