💡 On 5 October 1944, the Red Army's Memel offensive drove the remaining German forces from the area later forming Lithuania and Latvia into a small bridgehead at Klaipėda, then called Memel, and its port. The bridgehead held out under a three-month siege before finally being crushed during the Soviet East Prussian offensive in early 1945.
