France
💡 On 27 October 1807, King Charles IV of Spain and the French Emperor Napoleon signed a secret agreement at the Palace of Fontainebleau to drive the House of Braganza from Portugal and divide the kingdom into three regions. Within seven months Spain's own government had collapsed and two Spanish kings had abdicated, and by August 1808 Napoleon had placed his brother Joseph on the Spanish throne. The treaty was negotiated by Don Eugenio Izquierdo for Charles IV and Marshal Géraud Duroc for Napoleon.
