💡 Latacunga was founded in 1584 on a plateau in Ecuador, near the point where the Alaquez and Cutuchi rivers join to form the Patate, the headstream of the Pastaza. The city grew to become the capital of Cotopaxi Province, sitting an hour and a half south of Quito along the Pan-American Highway. By the 2022 census it was home to 77,267 people, most of them mestizo and indigenous.
