💡 In November 1943, American troops landed on Bougainville Island and established a beachhead at Torokina, opening the Bougainville campaign as part of the Allied Operation Cartwheel in the Pacific War. American forces held the perimeter for a year, and Australian troops later took over the offensive, mopping up isolated Japanese defenders until the last of them surrendered in August 1945.
