💡 On 20 October 1097, Crusader forces on their way to Jerusalem began besieging Antioch in Syria, a city held by the Seljuk Empire, during the First Crusade. The siege dragged on until 3 June 1098, when the Crusaders finally took the city, only to find themselves besieged in turn by a relieving Seljuk army. That second contest led to the Battle of Antioch, in which the Crusaders defeated the Seljuks under the command of Kerbogha.
