💡 Antofagasta was founded in 1868 as a port on the coast of northern Chile, about 1,100 kilometres north of Santiago. Once claimed by Bolivia, it was captured by Chile on 14 February 1879, an act that triggered the War of the Pacific, and by the 2024 census had grown into the country's fifth-largest city with 401,096 residents.
